Hamilton Schools District #3: Solving Classroom Lockdown

Hamilton

TRADITIONAL WIRELESS LOCKS FALL SHORT

In 2022, Hamilton School District #3 was working on how best to allow teachers and staff to quickly respond to emergency situations with a limited budget. “We had tried multiple wireless classroom lock solutions, but we were struggling to get them and keep them connected” said Ronda Hansen, Data Systems Analyst for HSD. Creating lockdown capabilities at the classroom level was proving to be much more challenging and costly than anticipated.

INSTEAD OF $1M, WE SPENT $200K

Hamilton School District was determined to find a way to allow for school lockdown of both the exterior entrances and interior classrooms, but realized that expanding their current exterior online access control system to the classrooms was cost prohibitive. So, they reached out to a security partner seeking an alternative and found Proxess®. “We quickly discovered that instead of nearly $1M with traditional access control, we could bring lockdown capability to every classroom door with Proxess for $200K,” Hansen said.

EASY FOR TEACHERS & STAFF

Any new system can create challenges for teachers and staff, especially when using an app on the phone to gain access. The HSD security team found Proxess to be so user friendly and easy to use that teachers and staff quickly adjusted to the new Proxess wirefree system. With Proxess locks in place, putting a classroom lock into lockdown can now be done with the touch of a button.

FLEXIBLE | INTUITIVE | SIMPLE

When asked “Why Proxess?”, Hansen highlighted the flexibility, ease of use from a management perspective, user simplicity and the Proxess system’s cost-effectiveness. For example, one HSD maintenance staff member was able to install 40+ locks over a couple day period while still accomplishing his other job duties during the day. “With Proxess there is now a very small chance we will have to rekey ever again since we have eliminated the need for most of the HSD staff to carry brass keys,” Hansen shared.
